“Collaboration and trust”

The Community Development Project Open Day

ACT is delighted to have launched our latest Rural Development project with an open day held in the village of Ouled Souissi in the south of Tunisia. The project will see a community transformed and better equipped for the future.

It was a day of celebration in the Gabès governorate on the 13th of May. “We were honoured by the presence of the representative of the Governor for the district of Menzel Habib,” says ACT Project Manager. “There were many in attendance from ACT’s local partners.”

Festivities, music and sport were used to celebrate the start of the Community Development Project (CDP). One goal of the day was to build up local trust in the project, so it was a great opportunity to present the main objectives of the CDP to the wider community.

Several experts provided awareness sessions on issues to do with health and hygiene, as well as medical consultations and training to help with the prevention and diagnosis of disease.

From the launch day alone, up to 45 children received awareness session and demonstrations on topics such as rabies, hand-washing and dental hygiene, as well as receiving tooth brushes and tooth paste.

A team of doctors and paramedics provided medical consultations for 151 people. They screened for diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity. Nine people received a first-time diagnosis. 18 people were referred for further medical consultation. Four participants started a blood pressure reduction treatment.

Four midwives provided awareness session and screening for breast cancer for over 30 women.

The Palliative Care Association of Gabès provided awareness sessions on cancer and end of life care.

The day also served as an evaluation for the need for other health events during the course of the CDP.

This was a wonderful event, there was such a good collaboration between the different partners! There was so much peace and joy!

The day contained speeches, activities, consultations and sport sessions for children and adults alike. All of the event’s activities served to highlight the importance of “collaboration and trust”, says ACT Director of Projects. We are honoured to be involved in such transformational projects.

NB: Menzel Habib has been chosen as the District in which this project will be implemented over the next few years. Ouled Souissi is the village which has been selected for the first two years.
